About This Quote

Art is freedom; Being able to bend things most people see as a straight line. The early 1960’s saw the rise in the popularity of the counterculture movement in the United States. This movement was one dedicated to political and social activism and often took place in the form of hippie style. One such group was the Merry Pranksters.

This group began in 1955, when Ken Kesey was asked to give a lecture by his friend, Neal Cassady. Kesey writes that at this time he thought he would write a book entitled One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, but instead decided to write a novel about driving cross-country with two other friends and their fleet of psychedelic Volkswagen buses. The group soon became known as the Merry Pranksters and they made many lasting contributions to the counterculture movement which included: Making waves with their psychedelic bus The Acid Tests The creation of The Grateful Dead The writing and recording of The Beatles’ White Album The Summer of Love
